Partha Bhattacharjee

(1958 – 2025)

Partha Bhattacharjee was an Indian contemporary artist primarily concerned with reality and illusion of human life. Partha is best known for his use of Trompe-l’œil in the Devi Series. He was awarded the President of India’s silver plaque for the best work for the year 2000-2001 by AIFAC.

Artist's Work

Partha dabbled in various forms and used different medium. His early works depicts family portraits in the Family Series. With time, his life philosophy and spirituality were clearly highlighted in the Devi Series, Dawn to Dusk Series, Mask Series, Sekal-Ekal (Then and Now) Series, and Illusion Series. Subsequently, the artist’s urge for an equal and peaceful life and call for action is depicted in the Mahakal Series and Jesus Series.

Towards the end of the decade, Partha worked rigorously on experimenting with the folk art form. His folk-art form is a culmination of his experiences in the remotest parts of the country. His travels to remote villages in and around Shantiniketan, Rampurhat, Tarapith, Sundarban in Bengal to Raghurajpur in Orissa and Ajanta in Maharashtra, had given him a distinct flavor of the Indian rural life and folk art form.
